KAYAK DESIGNERS INVITED
- As of next autumn, we will offer custom designs on the kayak decks - including graphics, colours, layouts and fittings. This follows our investment in new machinery and a brand new solution we've worked out for the deck material. This is offered together with a fully custom built kayak as before - the way it should be!

We are working on our own designs but are also inviting designers out there to participate: You can either design your own - or become a member of our international design team. Feel free to contact Baldy for details.

GREENLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008
- sponsored by Greenland Kayaks

Today we announce a partnership with the Qaqortoq Qajaq club, who host the 2008 Greenland Championships, this summer.

The partnership takes many forms, one of which is using our website to service the competition. The club is working on material for the site, to help local and international competitors, and will be updating the site regularly in the coming weeks and months.

SKIN KAYAK DELIVERED - a true copy throughout

This morning we delivered a true copy of seal skin kayaks, to Hotel Qaqortoq. The kayak was covered with 7hand-sewn sealskins, from the local tannery, measuring 520 cm and 18 kg. The hotel has now ordered a full harpoon set to complete the picture.

We used the opportunity to learn about the old method, which helps with an article Baldvin is working on for SeaKayaker Magazine in the USA.

UPDATE ON EXPEDITIONS AND COURSES IN 2008

Due to our involvement in several large expeditions as far apart as Greenland's east coast, Kamchatka and the Antarctic this year, as well as the Greenland Championships which take place in our town this July, we've decided to postpone all local cources and expeditions in South Greenland this summer.

This includes all cources and expeditions listed here our website.

GREENLAND KAYAKS SUPPORTS YOUTH CENTER

We are happy to announce a partnership with Illu Paarsivik, a nation wide youth center, where 14 to 17 year old Greenlanders get a second chance in life. We will build kayaks at below cost, as well as donate all extra gear and training to the center.

Sea kayaking demands discipline, traditional kayaking can involve lots of training and technique. Perhaps it can help build a stronger future? This is does not affect the Revolution budget.

FISHING BOATS RECYCLED INTO KAYAKS

From now on, we will be recycling oak planks from retired fishing boats in Qaqortoq, adding another layer of history to your new kayak, thanks to the owner of our local ship yard.

Oak is used in several sections of the frame, such as the masik, tunersui and isserfik bars near the cockpit, even more in expedition kayaks.

WORD LIST FOR TRADITIONAL GREENLANDIC KAYAKS ADDED
For skin-on-frame kayak scholars, we used the holidays to post a Greenlandic word list, describing many of the features and uses in traditional kayaks. Many of the books on SOF kayaks seem to draw on sources not in the original language, which may lead to misunderstandings and complications. We hope this will also clarify why there are different ways of spelling the same word.

SUPPORT THE KAYAK REVOLUTION - bring kayaks to remote village schools

On Dec.1st we launch the Kayaks to Schools project, where we deliver kayaks to as many village schools as possible in remote areas of Greenland.

Our first aim is to support schools in Appilatoq (Cape Farewell) and Isertoq (East Coast), total about 50 children.

The hunting villages in Greenland are the poorest areas of the country. Poverty leads to cultural erosion and kayaking as a living part of our culture is coming to an end. This project brings traditional equipment and training to some of the worst off villages, in the hope that cultural appreciation fosters self esteem in the young. Help us give a little back to the people of the kayak!

Each school receives 4 youth sized and one adult size Learning Curve Kayak (pictured above), together with necessary gear and teacher training, to BCU standards. We of course supply all equipment at raw cost.

BA DEGREE IN KAYAKING ANYONE? - Greenland Kayaks partner with University
You can soon study to a BA degree with a major in Greenlandic Kayaking, at a new Arctic Adventure Tourism campus, from HOLAR University College, opening here in Qaqortoq, 2008.

Admittedly, you will also have to focus on other outdoor skills, such as ski touring, wilderness first aid, remote operations, etc, as well as business subjects. A damn great course and we took part in designing it. The picture shows Baldvin of Greenland Kayaks together with HOLAR Rector Skuli Skulason signing the first docs. The campus is expected to open in August 2008, with 30 students. Applications will be received April, 2008.

GOLD, SILVER AND GOLD FOR ANGA - success at Greenland Championships
While Greenland Kayaks took a summer break, our head builder, Karl Isaksen travelled to the Greenland Champs and rolled it up, so to speak. Winning 3 gold and a silver or two, in a rolling, long and short distance racing, etc. Anga deserves a pat on the back!
Well done mate.

ROYAL KAYAKS - The King of Sweden receives 3 kayaks
At a reception last Friday, H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, received three youth size kayaks, together with all equipment and freight to Stockholm. The donation was made by Greenland Kayaks and the Qaqortoq Municipality, during His Majesty's visit in South Greenland.

It's been a while since kayaks were commissioned for Royalty, so we at GK are exceptionally proud of having participated. It is expected that His Majesty will donate the kayaks to scout groups in Stockholm, Sweden. (click to enlarge photos)

NEW KAYAK - Learning Curve Kayak
To support efforts to bring the kayak into Greenland's schools, we are adapting a new line - "Learning Curve Kayaks."
Custom built for schools and centers, using a common philosophy but adapted to individual needs. An example of this is a school of 12-15 year olds needs different sized kayaks than a school with 6-11 year olds.

Every time we get an order of 10 or more identical kayaks, we will build one from scratch as normal and then use it to build identical copies. The savings are considerable and the construction and features is aimed at this type of use.

NEW BOOK - The Culture of Greenland in Glimpses
Congratulations on the publicaton of his book with a nice coverage on the kayak, to Qaqortoq's museum curator Mr. Ole G. Jensen. Great pictures and friendly text, nice work!

Ole has been helping us with original sources on the kayak and related equipment, and has excellent insight into Greenland's culture after years as the museum curator on the East Coast. The book will be available on the new website (September). Until then, please email us if you would like a signed copy from the author.
